Commission Information

Remember the Godly Play stories created in the Garage Shop are a volunteer effort. Most of the woodworking is done by myself, and occasionally a member of our congregation will join me. Therefore, if you are on a time certain deadline, we suggest that you look to one of the commercial products. We simply can not guarantee a time specific commission.

Most Godly Play stories will need a bit of light sanding with 120 grit or so paper to remove glue residue and and prepare the surface for a final finish. Because of the low cost of our stories and the multiple requests we receive every week for commissions, we save an enormous amount of time passing on the final sanding and finish to your parish community. If you are looking for a story that is ready to use right out of the box, I suggest you look at one of the commercial alternatives.

Finally, because we are a one person Garage Shop and since we get so many commission requests, we ask that you limit your request to one or two stories  per commission. This way we can serve as many churches as possible. Some stories we can produce fairly quickly, while others, like the Temple for example, takes an enormous amount of time.

A Note About Finishes

A common question I get asked is what is a “safe” finish for a story. Frankly, all wood finishes are safe as long as they are allowed the time to cure fully. Curing time will be different for each finish. Check with your local stain and finish expert at a paint store.

What do I use? I like a finish that is hardy and easy to apply. My Favorite is an equal mixture of Boiled Linseed oil, gloss polyurethane, and Naphtha. The oil allows the mixture to be applied with a rag, a “hand rubbed” application, the Poly will build after a few coats and provide a durable finish, and the Naphtha will also help the finish to flow and dry quickly as the naphtha flashes off fairly quickly. This allows you to rub on an additional coat in an hour or so. How long will it take to cure? Depends on how much of each of the three liquids you use. Generally, 2 weeks to a month or you the “use your nose test”. When you can not smell the finish anymore, it is cured.

Other easy alternatives are simply rub on boiled Linseed oil, I will use this  when I do not want to “build” a finish. You can also get a can of spray shellac. Shellac is a resin that is secreted from the Lac bug. It is safe, in fact it is used as a food glaze! It dries fast and looks great. It is not very hardy, but you can always respray the story as needed.

Attention

October 2010

We have begun accepting commissions on a first come, first served basis. We are only accepting one commission at a time, as the back-log of projects to get out was quite over whelming.

We have also had to institute a policy that we will not ship a story until the commission fee has been paid. We regret this decision as it means completed stories sit around the shop, and it saves us from never being reimbursed for the materials.
